What is a Continuing Care Assistant?

A Continuing Care Assistant (CCA) helps clients with mobility, personal care, eating and medication monitoring.  CCAs work in a variety of settings including long-term care, home care, assisted living and some areas in acute care.

What is it like working as a Continuing Care Assistant in Saskatchewan?

CCAs mostly work in long-term care facilities that may be part of the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) or owned and operated by a private company or other organization. Shifts usually include evenings and weekends, as access to care for patients may be required 24/7. If working in a hospital environment, you will likely be working with the SHA in an acute care team made of nurses, physicians and other healthcare workers.

What can I earn as a Continuing Care Assistant?

Continuing Care Assistants working with the SHA are unionized employees and may be a member of one of the following unions based on work location throughout the province:

The approximate pay per hour includes:

  • Continuing Care Assistant – $23.17 – $24.84

In addition to the above pay band, enhanced dental and health benefits and vacation packages are also included.

How do I become a Continuing Care Assistant?

To work as a Continuing Care Assistant, you will require a Continuing Care Assistant certificate. The 32-week program is offered by Saskatchewan Polytechnic, as well as local regional colleges or through part-time distance flexible learning through the School of Continuing Education.
