Job Description

Reporting to the Manager, the Senior Dental Therapist will provide prevention services, diagnostic treatment planning, restorative/operative dental treatment, community and preventive dentistry services. The incumbent specializes in stimulating, coordinating, and delivering oral health promotion activities aimed at reducing disease and promoting oral health for people in the community. Incumbents must have an ability to work independently and within multi-disciplinary teams. The incumbent will plan, develop, organize, implement and evaluate the delivery of an active preventive oral health education and promotion program within the oral health professional's scope of practice. This position provides supervision, program management, and direction to the Oral Health Program. The position is bound by the following legislation: Dental Disciplines Act Saskatchewan Dental Therapists Association Bylaws and Regulations

Job Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate from a recognized dental therapy program with a Dental Therapist Diploma or Dental Nurse Diploma
  • Registered or eligible for registration with the Saskatchewan Dental Therapists Association

Experience
2 years' experience as a Dental Therapist
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to address health-related issues or life skills, other than oral health (eg. personal hygiene, promote immunization and breastfeeding)
  • Ability to problem solve, be creative and innovative, take initiative
  • Ability to travel on remote roads and fly in small aircraft to remote communities, as required
  • Ability to work in a cross cultural environment
  • Ability to work in isolated areas, as required
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to work with multi-disciplinary groups
  • Comprehensive knowledge of current infection control standards, practices and protocols.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of health principles/determinants of health/population-based outcomes including oral health, and their relationship to overall health and disease as applied to public health practice (population-based)
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills to interact with clients, parents, health professionals, and community leaders/groups in a positive and culturally appropriate manner
  • Highly developed oral/written communication skills
  • Highly developed organizational and multi-tasking skills
  • Knowledge in health promotion, public relations projects and/or media
  • Knowledge of current scientific information/research/best practice related to oral health, preschool oral health and other related health issues.
  • Knowledge of how to prepare for and utilize the media (e.g.: press, radio, television, and social media)
  • Knowledge of the program planning process
  • Strong computer skills (word processing, data entry)
  • Strong facilitation and presentation skills

  • Preference for this position will be given to HSAS members in accordance with the terms and conditions of the SAHO/HSAS Collective Agreement. HSAS seniority within the Saskatchewan Health Authority will be considered under the Selection Criteria.
