Specialist physician licensure requirements in Saskatchewan
Specialist physicians seeking to practise in Saskatchewan must be licensed through the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan (CPSS).
Licensure is based on a combination of training, certification and recent clinical experience. Saskatchewan offers multiple pathways that recognize Canadian, American and internationally trained specialists.
Licensure
In Saskatchewan, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (Royal College) is used to assess whether specialty training is equivalent to Canadian training programs.
All applicants must meet the following requirements to be licensed as a specialist physician in Saskatchewan:
Medical Degree
- medical degree from a school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools
Medical Knowledge
Have completed one of the following:
- Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination Part 1 (MCCQE1)
- United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Steps 1, 2 and 3
- Other proof acceptable to the CPSS
Certification requirements
Specialist physicians must meet certification standards aligned with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (Royal College), or an equivalent recognized pathway.
This includes:
- completion of a training program recognized through the Approved Jurisdiction Route (AJR) from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan, along with certification in the specialty in the country where training occurred
- certification with the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS)
- successful completion of Royal College examinations in the primary specialty through the Royal College Practice Eligibility Route (PER)
Currency of Practice
- active independent practice within the past three years
- minimum of five months of practice within the past five years
English language proficiency may be required.
