Short and manageable commutes
Most residents choose to own a vehicle, which makes it convenient to get to work, run errands and travel between nearby communities. With less congestion than larger urban centres and well-signed road systems, commuting is typically direct and reliable throughout the year.
In Saskatoon and Regina, Saskatchewan’s two major cities, the average commute time is about 20 minutes. In smaller cities such as Moose Jaw, Swift Current, Prince Albert and Yorkton, it can take as little as 10 minutes to get across the city.
Getting around the province
Saskatchewan is a large province, covering more than 651,000 square kilometres. Despite its size, travel between communities is well-connected by paved highways or gravel (grid) roads, all the way from the more densely populated southern prairies into the northern, forested regions.
People often describe distance in terms of time rather than kilometres. For example, travelling between Saskatoon and Regina is about 250 kilometres, but most people will say it takes two-and-a-half hours to drive.
Flights
Saskatchewan has international airports in both Saskatoon and Regina, offering regular flights to destinations across Canada and the United States.
Typical flight times from Regina and Saskatoon are similar, with approximate durations of:
- Vancouver: 2 hours
- Toronto: 3 hours
- Las Vegas: 3 hours
- Cancun: 5 hours
- London (one connection): 13 hours 30 minutes
For longer international travel, connections to destinations such as London are available with one stopover, usually through Calgary, Toronto or Vancouver, making travel convenient and accessible.
What this means for you
Short commutes give you more time in your day and greater flexibility in how you live and work. Whether you are heading to work, visiting another community or travelling further abroad, getting there is easy to plan and navigate.
