The Tri-Community

Nestled along the pristine shores of Lac La Ronge, 240 kilometers north of the city of Prince Albert, are the adjacent communities of the Town of La Ronge, Village of Air Ronge and Lac La Ronge Indian Band (Lac La Ronge and Kitsaki reserve communities), which collectively, are locally known as the ‘Tri-Community’. Although geographically located in the central portion of Saskatchewan, the Tri-Community is considered the gateway to the vast northern area of the province and as such La Ronge is labelled as the Capital of Northern Saskatchewan, with the third busiest airport behind Regina and Saskatoon.

The Tri-Community is situated on Provincial Highway 2 and is the last major centre where higher order goods and services can be accessed before venturing into the northern wilderness areas of the province, characterized by countless lakes, the vast boreal forest and the rocky Canadian Shield, where outdoor activities and natural resources are abound.

Located on Treaty 6 territory, the Tri-Community is homeland to Woodland Cree Indigenous people, who have called this area home for thousands of years. It is a diverse community, with several unique and celebrated cultures, particularly as they relate to Indigenous residents, which include the Métis.

The Lac La Ronge Indian Band is the largest First Nation in Saskatchewan and one of the 10 largest in Canada. The Tri-Community offers progressive growth amidst the natural beauty of the Lac La Ronge Provincial Park and is a year-round outdoor recreation paradise. Residents and tourists come from all over to explore the scenic beauty and take advantage of outdoor recreational opportunities, supporting local businesses in their travels.

The Tri-Community functions as a commercial service, retail and distribution hub for northern Saskatchewan communities, companies involved in natural resource exploration and the travelling public along the Highway 2 and 102 north-south route. It is also the base for many wilderness outfitters and is a major center for federal and provincial services that cater to a large area of north-central Saskatchewan.

While the three independent local governments provide administrative and other services to the residents within their own jurisdictional boundaries, the communities are situated adjacent to each other and are close-knit, working in partnership to efficiently provide a variety of cost-effective, regionalized services for all. Residents and visitors alike benefit from the cross-use of facilities and services.
