Job Description

Under the direction of the program manager and working within an interdisciplinary mental health and addiction team, the Community Mental Health Nurse, in adherence to nursing practice standards, will provide a range of clinical services to a population of children, youth and families living with acute and persistent mental health disorders. The Community Mental Health Nurse will be accountable for the provision of screening, assessment, referral, case management, treatment, as well as, program development and evaluation.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree/Diploma in Nursing or Bachelor Degree/Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing
  • Registered or eligible for registration with the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses Association (SRNA) or Registered Psychiatric Nurses Association of Saskatchewan (RPNAS)
  • Requires a minimum of two years (post graduate) recognized experience in a mental health setting working with children, youth and families presenting with acute and chronic mental health problems

  • Knowledge of normal child and adolescent development and psychopathology
  • Must be able to establish and adjust priorities in accordance with competing demands and complex issues
  • Ability to implement a variety of evidence based intervention strategies (individual or group) for individuals with mental health and addiction problems in a community based setting
  • Knowledge of community psychiatric nursing clinical standards of practice and the ability to develop and ensure compliance of those standards related to a community mental heath setting
  • Knowledge of the diversity of cultures, values and traditions and their impact on accessing mental health services
  • Leadership abilities and the ability to work within a change management model
  • Interpersonal competence, including effective problem solving and conflict resolutions skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary team to manage complex and multiple demands
  • Ability to work in partnership within the community and possess a broad knowledge of community resources including treatment programs and support agencies
  • Ability to design, initiate and conduct in service training for other professionals
  • Ability to provide public education regarding children and youth and mental health concerns
  • Knowledge and practical application of the Mental Health Services Act and Health Information Protection Act and other legislation that impacts the work of clinicians in a mental health setting
  • Ability to enter and retrieve data in computer database systems
  • Knowledge and skill related to community psychiatric nursing practice including, but not limited to, assessment, triage, treatment, case management and medication usage and side effects
  • Ability to identify, implement and evaluate areas of client difficulty across a wide range of clinical presentation and formulate evidence based intervention
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal); Ability to document in a concise and timely manner
