The Prince Albert Parkland Health Region offers excellent opportunities for fulfilling careers while providing an
exceptional quality of life. The Region is home to about 78,000 residents, about 41,000 live within the city of Prince Albert, and 95 per cent of residents are within 30 minutes of a hospital or long term care facility.
The Health Region is located over the geographic centre of Saskatchewan. The major centre and the only city located in the Region's boundaries is Prince Albert. There are 22 rural municipalities, 7 towns, 21 villages and 2 hamlets. The Region also has 6 resort villages, 12 First Nations and 4 tribal councils. There are also many acreages, farms, lakes, and outdoor camping sites as well. Wilderness abounds within the Prince Albert National Park, also located within the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region. Farming, forestry, tourism, pulp and paper are the area's major industries.
The Prince Albert Parkland Health Region offers a wide range of services, not only for the residents of the Health Region, but also for people from surrounding regions and Northern Saskatchewan. Twenty per cent of the Region's population are Registered Indians (15,480).
There are two hospitals located within the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region, two integrated facilities, four community health centres and 12 long-term care homes.
Prince Albert Parkland Health Region has more than 50 Family Physicians plus 40 Physician Specialists providing services in the following areas:
- General Surgery, Orthopedics
- Obstetrics and Gynecology
- Ophthalmology
- Internal Medicine, Radiology
- Anesthesia
- Psychiatry
- Pathology
- Otolaryngology
- Urology
- Pediatrics
The health region employs more than 2000 health care professionals and has an operating budget of more than $130 million.
Victoria Hospital
As a level 1 regional hospital the Vic provides a wide range of specialized services. The hospital continues to take pressure off the tertiary centres in the province while providing acute services across northern Saskatchewan.
The Victoria Hospital is part of the Region's integrated health care system bringing together the skills of many different health care providers.
Ambulatory Care
Ambulatory care services have been provided at the Vic since 1997. They include: diagnostics (biopsies, lumbar punctures); endoscopy; phlebotomy; orthopedics; ophthalmology; otolaryngology; gynecology; and minor surgical procedures.
Diagnostic Imaging
The Victoria Hospital employs a range of imaging services including digital radiology and CT scanning.
Dialysis Unit
The dialysis unit, a satellite of St. Paul's Hospital, has 6 state-of-the-art computerized hemodialysis machines. The newly expanded unit is providing a template for future satellites in the province.
Emergency Department
Our emergency department provides 24 hour onsite physician services with a team of nursing staff with certification in Advanced Life Support. The unit has 2 large fully equipped trauma/cardiac resuscitation rooms. Approximately 3,100 clients pass through emergency per month.
Chemotherapy Outreach Program
The chemotherapy program has a unique team prepared to administer chemotherapeutic agents. The program is administered by the Saskatoon Cancer Clinic.
Critical Care
The intensive care unit is an 8 bed, technologically advanced multi-purpose unit providing a wide range of services, coronary care, medical and surgical care and post anesthetic care.
Medical/Surgical Services
The obstetrics department offers new parents their own privacy in 15 separate rooms. A host of follow up programs are also available. The Victoria Hospital has 4 recently renovated and modern operating rooms able to handle emergent and elective surgeries for northern Saskatchewan. The palliative care floor of the Vic offers the right services to accommodate the needs of palliative care patients and their families.
Therapy Department
The department sees over 150 patients daily. Therapy workers provide rehabilitation, education, exercise, intervention and counseling. The departments team approach allows more one-on-one time with the clients. The therapy department also offers programs for children with neuro-developmental delays as well as speech and language pathology.
Region Services
Long Term Care
Nursing homes located in our surrounding communities serve more than 590 people every year. Many of our modern
facilities incorporate an "at home" setting.
Home Care
Keeping people independent is the focus of our home care. Home care services are provided to an estimated 2,250 people each year. Nursing, personal care, respite, and assessments are a few specialized services provided.
Mental Health
In-, out- and day-patient counseling, treatment and prevention services are available.
Travelling clinics are also provided in the Region.
Rehabilitation Services
Services available in the Region include: physiotherapy; respiratory therapy; podiatry; occupational therapy;
recreational therapy; community therapy; cardiac rehabilitation; acquired brain injury (ABI) rehabilitation; speech/language pathology.
Community Health Services
The Region's community health services include many specialized programs including: health inspection; health education for new mothers; immunization; early childhood intervention; nutrition education; sexual health education; sexually transmitted disease clinic; counseling services; child health clinics; communicable disease control; dental health; environmental health and public safety education programs focusing on preventable diseases including diabetes education; acquired brain injury program to provide case management and rehabilitation for those who have suffered a brain injury; pediatric occupational therapy program for pre-school children; primary care nursing for client assessment, public education and follow up.
