Recreation
Regardless of which direction you take, recreational and leisure pursuits and pastimes for all ages and all seasons are always minutes away, making the northeast the envy of many outdoor enthusiasts. From camping, swimming, and golfing in the summer months, and hunting and fishing in the fall to snowmobiling and downhill skiing in the winter, and enjoying walking trails and bird watching in the spring, the access to activities catering to all interests is seemingly unending.
One of Saskatchewan's most popular fishing spots, Tobin Lake, is said to be home to the best walleye fishing in North America. The fishing is of equally high caliber at nearby Codette Lake. Anglers can also try their hand at Greenwater Provincial Park, Kipabiskau Regional Park, St. Brieux Regional Park, Barrier Lake, and Marean Lake where camping facilities and other overnight accommodations will entice every visitor to enjoy some much-deserved vacation time.
Nature enthusiasts can enjoy walking trails created within park-like settings in both Melfort and Tisdale or travel to the Pasquia Regional Park near Carrot River, where several trails wind along the banks of the Carrot River and an interpretive centre features displays of the many fossils unearthed in the area over the years, including the discovery of "Big Bert", the first prehistoric reptile of its kind in Canada and one of only four such discoveries in North America.
Whether looking for a competitive challenge or a recreational outing, golfing enthusiasts have plenty of opportunities to test their skill in the northeast. Nipawin's 18-hole Evergreen Golf Course is rated among the top 100 golf courses in Canada and several other courses in the northeast are considered equally challenging. Courses at the Tisdale, Melfort, Pasquia Regional Park, Greenwater Provincial Park, and several points in-between will keep the avid golfer chasing the elusive hole-in-one all summer long.
If swimming is the preference, there is no end to the many and varied watering holes available in the northeast. Whether it's the sandy beaches located along the shores of the many lakes dotting the landscape or the clear, blue water of an outdoor pool, locations around the region can accommodate swimmers of all ages and abilities. The lone indoor pool available for year-round use for recreation, swimming lessons, competitions, and rental is located in the Northern Lights Palace at Melfort.
Hunting, whether for big game or fowl, can be pursued at points throughout the region. Outfitters and guides are available for the inexperienced or those unfamiliar with the area. Big game natural to the area include moose, elk, white tail deer, and bears while ducks and geese, sharp-tailed, ruffed, and spruce grouse are also found in the region.
Tapping into the same resources that produced the summer's catch, winter recreation features ice fishing on the region's many lakes. Miles of groomed trails winding through Nipawin, Carrot River, Hudson Bay, Greenwater, Barrier Lake, and Kipabiskau Lake areas take snowmobilers on a picturesque journey throughout the northeast under a soft blanket of Prairie snow. Cross-country ski trails are located at several sites across the region while downhill skiing and snowboard enthusiasts can enjoy their favorite winter pastime at Wapiti Regional Park.
Recreation complexes within Melfort, Nipawin, Tisdale, Hudson Bay, Porcupine Plain, and Kelvington are the hub of winter activity as everyone from children and youth to adults enjoy curling, hockey, and skating. Some facilities also feature an indoor rifle range and outdoor rinks as well. The northeast is proud to be the home of the Melfort Mustangs and Nipawin Hawks of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, the Tri-Town Thunder of the North Saskatchewan Hockey League, the Tisdale Trojans of the Saskatchewan Midget "AAA" Hockey League, and several senior teams in the Pasquia Hockey League.
