The broad geographic area the region serves includes one city, 32 towns and villages, 21 rural municipalities and five First Nation communities throughout the northeast.
Nestled within dense forests, pristine Lakeland, and the picturesque Carrot River Valley, the mighty Saskatchewan River winds intermittently through the vast expanse of rural agricultural land that is the Kelsey Trail Health Region. It is the region's close proximity to the beauty and serenity of all that Mother Nature has to offer that has seen the area develop into one of the most sought-after tourism destinations in the province. It is this same quality that draws those looking for an affordable escape from the city to relocate to an area where they can enjoy the best of both worlds - a truly enviable quality of life at an affordable cost.
Within the borders of the Kelsey Trail Health Region, the larger communities of Melfort, Nipawin, and Tisdale create the hub of the northeast. The smaller communities of Hudson Bay, Porcupine Plain, Kelvington, Carrot River, and St. Brieux add further diversity to the area.
Melfort, Nipawin, and Tisdale offer many of the services and amenities of the city without the high crime rate, excessive traffic, and many nameless faces. Residents of these three larger communities take great pride in the progressive and friendly communities they live and work in. Residents of the smaller communities also enjoy an affordable lifestyle in communities that are considered safe to work, live, and raise a family while, at the same time, remaining in close proximity to the amenities available in the larger centres.
Situated in one of the richest and most productive farmland areas in the country, most industry in the northeast is agricultural-related, ranging from bio-related production, meat processing, feed mills, and seed cleaning to the sale and service of agricultural equipment and supplies. Northeast Saskatchewan boasts of being home to the largest grain storage capacity in northeast Saskatchewan, the largest grain handling centre in the province, the largest pulse processor in Western Canada, one of the largest buyers and processors of canola and flax in North America, and the largest honey-producing area in the province. In addition to the wide variety of crops produced in the area, livestock production is also diverse.
Complimenting the agricultural-based economy is a thriving business and manufacturing sector. Home to a variety of manufacturers and processors, residents throughout the region rely on these local firms to provide their families and
communities with economic stability and opportunity for the future. Downtown retail merchants as well as those located within shopping malls and other business sectors in these communities also strive to meet the consumer needs of visitors and residents alike while providing friendly, reliable customer service.
The relatively close proximity of the Fort a la Corner (FALC) forest, world renown for the growing diamond exploration activities taking place, bodes increasingly well for the future growth and development of these communities. FALC possesses one of the world's largest diamond-producing geological sites in the world.
Housing
Prospective homeowners will have little trouble finding the home of their dreams within an affordable budget. Whether buying or building brand new, there are many quality, affordable housing options for those looking to relocate to
northeastern Saskatchewan. Several communities also offer tax incentives as an added bonus to those looking to relocate.
Education
A variety of preschool programs provide educational opportunities for the 3 - 5 year age category within the region. Students from Kindergarten through Grade 12 receive their education through schools affiliated with the North East School Division, which resulted from the amalgamation of the former Hudson Bay, Melfort-Tiger Lily, Nipawin, and Tisdale school divisions.
Adult learners may enjoy access to a wide range of university, technical, adult basic education, literacy, and English as a Second Language courses from sites located within the communities of Melfort, Nipawin, Tisdale, and Hudson Bay through Cumberland Regional College. Technical courses offered in co-operation with SIAST, and first and second year university classes from the University of Saskatchewan and University of Regina are available throughout the year. The Melfort University Program Centre is also a U of S Arts and Science-designated off-campus site, allowing full-time students to enroll directly in the College of Arts and Science without having to re-locate to Saskatoon. Classes are also available online.
Career counseling services are available through the College and the Career Information Centre provides current university, college, and institute calendars, career profiles, job market statistics, and other related career information. Agricultural programs and personal development classes are also available through Cumberland Regional College.
Family Life
Spiritual wellness is available through a wide variety of spiritual affiliations that operate in the northeast. Other family-oriented activities are available at mini-golf courses, movie theatres, bowling alleys, and restaurants located in communities throughout the region.
